Every 15 Minutes Hits Mateo With a Crash

By admin

After the mock car crash, Jessica Salazar quietly "rests in peace."

On Thursday, April 24, everybody at San Mateo High School marched out to the bleachers by the football field to attend the first half of a two-part presentation called Every 15 Minutes. Every 15 Minutes is “an educational experience that reminds us all of the dangers associated with driving while impaired,” according to the official website.

On the field, a grotesque car crash was unveiled. The mock accident included four of the students at our school, the San Mateo Fire Department, the San Mateo Police Department, the Coroner’s Office and many other officials–all of whom acted like it was a real accident. In the crash, one drunk driver killed two and paralyzed a third.
On Friday, April 25, the whole school came to a mock funeral for the students killed in the car crash, as well as sixteen ‘living dead’. The ‘living dead’ were students snatched from classrooms prior to the assembly on Thursday, to illustrate the concept that a person is killed or maimed every fifteen minutes by a drunk driver. These students did not attend class on Thursday and Friday, to further drive home the concept.
During the funeral, parents and friends of the students that had ‘passed on’ gave speeches. Tears and sniffles were present throughout the entire ceremony. Look for in-depth coverage of this event that rocked our school in the April 30 issue of the San Mateo Hi.
