Every year at the end of senior year a few seniors get devastating news. That news is the shocker of not graduating. How could the administration help these students to graduate? It’s extremely sad that some students won’t be graduating. All the years of hard work and effort ends with nothing. Although there are some students that do want to walk the stage, it is still constantly a battlefield until the day of graduation. Some students don’t care about school and don’t even try, in the other hand some do care and won’t quit until they graduate. Sometimes the issues stopping these students graduate are family issues and thus it is necessary to get to the bottom of what is causing students to not graduate. I believe teachers should encourage students to graduate no matter how low their grades are because there has to be a possible way to graduate. Graduating High School and walking across the stage with a diploma is everybody’s dream.

Recently our own San Mateo High School Quiz Kids team qualified for nationals in Chicago. Unfortunately, none of our team can go because the captain happens to be graduating the day before the tournament.

Also, team captain Eliot Storch, our own opinion editor of the Hi is the high scorer of the entire NAQT tournament held at Cal, averaging an enormous 99 points per game.

Eliot Storch has been a dedicated member of the Quiz Kids team for more than three years. He says he’s enjoyed every moment of it and relishes his sophomore year team the most, where they won the Quiz Kids show you see on television every now and then, and went to Nationals in Chicago.

On May 5, Mr. Attilo Tribuzi and Ms. Robyn Tribuzi, both teachers at San Mateo High School, received the Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Award for Broadway by the Bay’s Crazy for You. Ms. Tribuzi was nominated for the best choreography of a musicial. Mr. Tribuzi was nominated for the music of that musical. Their choreography was running up against the choreography for American Idiot, a musical currently running on Broadway. The artistic director gave Mr. and Ms. Tribuzi the award because they couldn’t attend the big ceremony for San Mateo’s play practice.

Ms. Tribuzi comments, ” It is very exciting to be recognized for the hard work I put into the musical. Musical theater is my passion and I love to introduce people to it, which is why the dance classes go to New York every other year. ” Her dedication pays off. In fact, this isn’t her first time receiving an musical award though. In 2006, Ms. Tribuzui received an award for Broadway by the Bay’s Miss Saigon. Congratulations on to Mr. and Ms. Tribuzi .Y

For refreshments there were many delicious cookies ranging from chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, and oatmeal. These cookies were from the courtesy of Ms. Casale’s nutrition classes. They had baked 55 dozen cookies in two full days.
This was the first year that Ms. Casale’s classes made cookies for Senior’s Awards Night,by the request of Ms. Shiu and Ms. Fenech. Ms. Casale commented, “I thought it would be a nice way for my students to give back to the school.” Ms. Casale said, the only conflict of baking the cookies was finding a way to store them. Overall, this was a success, because both the seniors and their families enjoyed them.

towards the Golden Gate Bridge, but the water was too choppy there, so the
boat changed course and headed towards McCovey Cove. The students got food, danced a lot, and had fun. Senior Michael Wu had a great time, and said, “I was really excited because I always wanted to be in
McCovey Cove in a boat.”

The red curtain rises to reveal rows of seniors, all in formalwear, patiently waiting to see what awards will be bestowed upon them. The audience, consisting of friends and family, clap and cheer with pride. Senior Alyssa Royce, the Associated Student Body President, started off the night as the Master of Ceremonies.

The first awards given out were the Community & Memorial Awards. One (sometimes several) speaker(s) from the organization or family that created the award presents each award to its recipient. Awards are given for traits such as courage, kindness, volunteering, and perseverance in the face of adversity. The next awards to be presented are the High School and Departmental Awards. These are given for completion of school programs, such as Biotechnology and the Art Certificates, and excellence in specific academic categories. The Community College Scholarships were given to four seniors. Lastly, the Major Academic Achievement Awards were given. California Scholarship Federation Lifetime Memberships were given to fifty seniors. The National Merit Program presented its awards and the three valedictorians of the 2010 class were recognized. Principle Yvonne Shiu presented closing remarks.

Mercedes Ballesteros, a senior and journalist who’s going to UC Berkeley, was one of many to receive several awards. The seniors were unaware of what awards they were going to be given. Mercedes commented, “I feel very grateful and blessed.” Undoubtedly, this is a sentiment shared by many that night.

They enjoyed a delicious barbeque while hanging out with friends. Some students signed yearbooks lying in a hammock under a canopy our school devotes one, all fun, day to our awesome seniors. During the day, people have fun at Senior Activity Day, and then at night the seniors party on the pay at the Boat Dance the seniors had a lot of fun on the bouncy houses, playing Frisbee and listening to music.

“I had so much fun hanging out with friends on the grass we signed yearbooks and had a great time,” says Victoria Brehmer.

“I spent most of my time making ‘Kandi’ bracelets,” explained Ally Forrest.

“Senior Activity Day was really chill and we blew bubbles and the bouncy house was really fun,” thought Daria Osipchuk.

“I signed yearbooks and played Frisbee with my friends,” says Hannah Halpern.

Overall, Senior Activities Day was a huge success and a great way for the seniors to spend some of their last few weeks together.
